Things I Should Know as a Lit Major

Little things overheard/picked up/etc in the process of earning a Lit degree -- By an awkward college student.

“OK”

was first used as a misspelled abbreviation for “all correct” (according to research published by Allen Walker Read), as a joke in an editorial column in the Boston Morning Post onSaturday, March 23, 1839.

The word now has a full-length biography called OK: The Improbably Story of America’s Greatest Word, by Allan Metcalf and published by Oxford University Press. No joke.

The Raven

is an excellent movie, and every lit major should go see it. There were a few bad reviews, but I thought it was well-written for a blockbuster-type movie. The writers knew a lot about Poe’s work and did a good job incorporating analysis of his stories, and Cusack represented him well as far as I know :) although he might have been a little too lively haha. Good performance overall though! If you like Poe, definitely see it if you haven’t already.

Must-Read Monday

John Kennedy Toole’s Confederacy of Dunces.  It’s long and there are lots of separate stories to follow, but it’s so funny that you wouldn’t want it to end any sooner.  The biggest complaint I’ve heard about it involves the main character—a lot of people can’t stand him.  You aren’t really supposed to like him, as in, you wouldn’t want to meet him, but he’s hilarious to read about!  It’s a perfect summer book, because it’s funny and long and is best understood if it’s read without long breaks in between.

I know it’s the wrong Monday but I haven’t posted in forever.  Submit please!  Especially now, since it’s summer and I actually have time to post, but there are no classes.
